Chasing Cars.
By Kortney Forbes.
The high school life was over, not that Shawn really cared. He hated school, he was a wallflower, no one knew Shawn, or let alone cared about him much. The only real friend he had was a girl named Abigail, but she wasn’t even his friend. Abigail and Shawn had a love/hate relationship, he was always trying to impress her and he always failed. Abigail was Shawn’s high school sweet heart, but he never told her, and now he would never get the chance too.
Shawn made his way to around the city park; it was a late snowy night in December. All of the once greened blossomed trees were in hibernation awaiting the call of spring. Shawn walked up to the place where he had met Abigail for the first time. It was at the swing set at the playground after their first day of high school. Shawn had just moved in to town and had a rough first day, he was bullied and picked on and no one really cared, that was until a girl made her way to him. She was like an angel who came to help him out of hell, her bright blonde pixie hair had always made Shawn think of a cuter Tinker bell, and her eyes were always a bright shade of green that matched the freshly grown green earth. It was on that day that she had made him feel wanted. Ever sense that time Shawn and Abigail were friends, sure she was disappointed with Shawn a lot and she didn’t like when he called her Abby they were still close. Shawn pulled himself away from the memories once the snow started falling again.
Tonight it had seemed that every snowflake was just another memory he would never hold again, something that had lived and then melted away to be forgotten about. He pushed the snow off of the swing at sat down. Shawn wasn’t sure what he was going to do anymore. He was a baby turtle in a world of hungry sharks, alone, helpless, and afraid. Sure Shawn could call Abigail on the phone or text her to meet him but what would he tell her, he didn’t know how to explain his burning undying love for the girl he met at the park.
“Shawn, I thought I might find you here.” Her soft angel voice warmed the young boy’s ear as a small smile ran across his face. She had found him like always and this made Shawn feel better. “Your mom told me you hadn’t come home. So I thought I would come and see if you were at the park, and I was right.” She sat on the swing next to him and patted his back. She was just trying to make him feel better for her leaving him alone. Shawn looked at her, and for the first time Shawn saw his abbey crying, his one true love was crying. Shawn stood up and pulled her in to his arms, “shhh its ok, abby im here for you,” Shawn held her close and rubbed her back to comfort her. “what’s wrong abb?” Shawn asked as he looked down at her beautiful eyes.
The girl looked up at him with her tear stained makeup face, Shawn wiped away the makeup he could and kissed her for head. “I’m leaving Shawn,” her voice was full of sadness “give me a reason to stay.” Shawn was confused on what she meant. Why did she need a reason to stay, she had every reason to go, she had a collage, a job, and all her stuff, what possible reason would she have to stay in this dump of a town. The boy let out a sigh, he did love her but was that a good enugh reason for her to stay in this town or maybe she would take him with her. “I um…well…” Shawn couldn’t form the words he wanted to tell her, if he was brave he would have told her that he loved her, that he needed her to stay with him, that without her he was nothing but a lame wallflower with no purpose. Abby pushed away from Shawn and began walking away, now he was losing her. as his one true love made her way across the way to where her bright red dodge intrepid sat parked. Shawn watched the one and only friend he had slip though his fingers like water did when he was washing his hands. Suddenly he was running towards her, his shoes crunching the snow that lay under him, soon he had her hand in his. “Abby please don’t leave me, I love you, I have always loved you, I can’t live without you.” It was a mouth full that slipped through Shawn’s mouth; she looked at him and smiled her loving smile that seemed to make the once cold winter night feel like summer.
Her lips pressed against him and Shawn’s world began to spin, it felt like the world came to a sudden stop and all the planets aligned and that his soul goal in life was complete. He had told the girl of his dreams that he loved her and she in return loved him back. Shawn pulled away and looked down to her angel girl. “Shawn, I love you as well, I waited forever for you to tell me but you never did, I was starting to believe you saw right through me,” Shawn let out a chuckle and held her close. “I thought the same thing.”
